Luperon
was founded during the Restoration. In 1875 it was a cantonal
post of the Puerto Plata province.
In 1907 it became a community of the same province. It was
given it current name on November 18, 1927 in honour of General
Gregorio Luperón, a hero during the war of Restoration.
Located
on the idyllic Northwest coast of the Dominican Republic,
Luperon , today, is a small village whose inhabitants survive
on farming, fishing and tourism. It's proximity to some of
the loveliest beaches on the island as well as to "La
Isabella", the Spanish settlement build by Christopher
Columbus, have made it a popular destination for boaters around
the world.
Here are
some first person's accounts of the village:
"For
some reason this port feels so comfortable. The anchorage
is lovely, totally protected and calm. A large fully enclosed
bay with a border of mangroves and green hills all around.
This is truly the most social and friendly anchorage I've
ever been in. (from Redwings, Around the word)"
"
The
streets were narrow, full of motoconchos (motorcycles), mulos
(mules), chickens and people. The buildings were rickety but
brightly painted and well maintained. The hills were green
and lush, the climate hot and humid, and the people friendly,
smiling, and enjoying their merengue music no matter where
they were. There was very little English, rice and beans with
meat was the standard fare, and, despite the foreigness and
the language barrier, or maybe because of it, we returned
to the boat with wide grins. This was going to be something
special"
"We
have really enjoyed our stay in Luperon. The people are very
friendly and helpful. Our refrigerator compressor broke and
the local hardware store guy has made arrangements to get
a new one for us from the big city of Santo Domingo. Everything
from beer to diesel to phone calls is much cheaper here, which
is good on our cruising budget. We rented a motorcycle and
made numerous trips the gas station with a Jerry Jug on each
knee to fill our diesel tanks. Yesterday we went to "Las
Cascades" the water falls. It was a lot more challenging
than we thought climbing up the falls and swimming up current
between the falls, but it was the best waterslide ever coming
down"
